One of the biggest advantages of working directly with a factory supplier is the flexibility it offers when it comes to colour options. In streetwear fashion, colour plays a crucial role in defining a brand’s visual identity, and having the ability to choose or customize colours allows brands to create garments that truly reflect their aesthetic.
At Hula Global, streetwear brands are not limited to a small set of predefined colours. Instead, brands have the freedom to develop products in a wide variety of shades depending on their design requirements. Whether a brand wants classic neutral tones, vibrant statement colours, or unique custom shades, the production process can be adjusted to accommodate those preferences.
One of the most common ways brands specify colours in garment manufacturing is through the Pantone colour system. This system provides standardized colour codes that help ensure consistency between design concepts and final production. When a brand provides a specific Pantone reference, the factory works to match the fabric dyeing process as closely as possible to that exact shade.
However, producing garments in a precise Pantone colour often involves additional steps during the dyeing and fabric preparation stages. Because of this, custom colour matching typically requires higher minimum order quantities (MOQs). The reason is that dyeing fabric to match a specific Pantone shade usually requires dedicated dye lots, which become more cost-effective when produced in larger quantities.
For example, when brands request exact Pantone colour matching for certain streetwear products, the production requirements may involve higher MOQs. In many cases, items such as sweatshirts and hoodies may require around 5,000 pieces per colour to maintain efficiency in the dyeing process. For products like T-shirts, the requirement may be slightly higher, often around 8,000 pieces per colour.
These numbers may vary depending on the fabric type, the dyeing process, and the specific garment construction, but the general idea remains the same: precise custom colour matching typically works best at larger production volumes.
That said, there is also a more flexible approach available for brands that may not require an exact Pantone match. Many brands are open to working with standard fabric colours that are already available through mills or are close to their desired shade. In such cases, the minimum order quantities for each colour can be significantly lower.
This flexibility can be particularly beneficial for emerging streetwear brands or brands that want to experiment with multiple colour options within a collection. Instead of committing to very large quantities for each shade, brands can explore smaller production runs using readily available fabric colours.
Streetwear collections often feature a mix of classic and bold colour choices. Neutral tones such as black, white, grey, and beige are frequently used as foundational colours because they are versatile and easy to style. These colours also work well with graphic prints and embroidered branding, which are common elements in streetwear garments.
In addition to neutrals, many streetwear brands incorporate more vibrant or statement colours into their collections. Shades such as red, blue, green, or pastel variations can help create visual interest and seasonal variety. These colours are often used to create limited releases or highlight certain pieces within a collection.
Another popular approach in streetwear is the use of unique dye treatments and fabric finishes. Techniques such as garment dyeing, washed effects, vintage fades, or pigment dyes can create distinctive colour textures that give garments a worn-in or artistic appearance. These treatments are often used to create pieces that feel more individual and authentic, which aligns well with the culture of streetwear fashion.
When developing a colour strategy for a streetwear brand, it is also important to consider how colours interact with other design elements such as prints, logos, and graphics. Certain colours can make graphics stand out more effectively, while others create a more subtle or minimal aesthetic.
Because of these factors, many brands begin their product development process by identifying a core colour palette for their collection. This palette may include a few consistent base colours along with seasonal shades that change from one release to another.
At Hula Global, our goal is to provide brands with the flexibility they need when it comes to colour selection. By working closely with fabric mills and dyeing facilities, we help ensure that the colours used in production align with the brand’s design vision while also remaining practical from a manufacturing standpoint.
For brands that require specific guidance on colour options or minimum order quantities, our team is always available to discuss the details. Additionally, brands can refer to our MOQ section for more information about production requirements for different garments.
If a particular question about colour options or production specifications is not addressed there, brands are encouraged to reach out directly to our team for further assistance. By collaborating closely during the product development process, we aim to help streetwear brands create garments that reflect their identity while maintaining efficient and reliable production.
